Saturday, August 21, 2010 (UMBC’s Campus, Public Policy Building), 8:30 AM – 4:00 PM. Breakfast refreshments, lunch, and light afternoon refreshments will be served.

Guest Speaker, Dr. Philip Rous, Dean of the College of Natural and Mathematical Sciences, UMBC, Dr. Rous’ background: Postdoctoral positions – Cambridge University and University of California at Berkeley, Ph.D. – Imperial College of Science and Technology, University of London (UK) 1986, D.I.C. Read her paper with Jorge Madrid on The Intersection of STEM Education & the Green Economy: Incorporating the Latino Community. Jorge Madrid is a research associate for the Energy Policy Team in American Progress, assisting Van Jones in spearheading the Green Opportunity Initiative.

SATURDAY AFTERNOON SESSION FOR NEW/INCOMING M.S. STUDENTS, 1:30 PM
How to be successful in your first year of graduate school
Guest Speaker: Sundiata Jangha, Director UMBC Math/Science Upward Bound, Mentoring Workshop leader for the MIT Summer Research Program, the Midwest Crossroads AGEP (Northwestern University, Indiana University and Purdue University). A former Fellow for Georgia Tech’s NSF-funded STEP Program, teaching chemistry and accelerated physics, GEM Fellow, and former leader for the FOCUS program, “Sunji” Jangha is a motivational speaker who helps incoming graduate students to understand how graduate school is different from undergrad. Featured in “U.S. Black Engineer”, Jangha specializes in making sure that students understand the role and expectations of graduate school professors.
