UMBC, the #1 Up and Coming University in the U.S., is pleased to announce the date for our 2010 graduate school visitation program. The mini “Graduate Horizons” program to be held on our campus, Tuesday, July 13, 2010. This program, co-sponsored by the UMBC Graduate School, the Meyerhoff Graduate Fellows Program (Summer Biomedical Training Program) and PROMISE: Maryland’s AGEP, will be held in lieu of our traditional, large-scale Summer Horizons campus visitation and Fall Graduate Horizons programs. This exciting “Mini” Graduate Horizons is being held for the following student groups:
- Students who are engaged in summer research on UMBC’s campus (e.g. REUs, McNair Summer Research Institute, Biology summer programs, etc.)
- Prospective graduate students (who are not part of any current summer programs on campus) who would like to visit UMBC this summer.
REGISTRATION
Registration for this program is free. UMBC’s summer research scholars will be automatically registered for the program through the respective summer program directors. Other students may register by posting a reply to this post and sending emails to both the Graduate Program Director and Coordinator of the academic department that you are interested in.

* 9:30 AM: Welcome (Speakers: Justine Johnson, Graduate Meyerhoff Fellows Program & Rae Sturge, President of UMBC’s Graduate Student Association); The Graduate School Admissions Process (Speaker: Dr. Renetta G. Tull)
* 10:30 AM: The Road to Graduate School (Panel discussion by current UMBC graduate students)
* 11:30 AM: Motivational Keynote Speech (Speaker: UMBC President Freeman Hrabowski)

If you would like to tour a department or meet with a professor, please contact your summer research program coordinator (for UMBC’s summer students), or contact the appropriate Graduate Program Director (faculty) and the respective Graduate Program Coordinator (staff.)
Our mini Horizons program will not cover meals, transportation, nor lodging. Students will need to make provisions through their summer research programs or via other funding.
Recommended “sit-down” meal — Visit The Skylight Room
The upscale Skylight Room restaurant (3rd Floor, The Commons), located on the third floor, overlooks the Library Green. It is the perfect place to enjoy great food, good service, and a relaxing atmosphere-not to mention an amazing view! The Skylight Room has a one rate all you care to eat policy at the door that includes the entree bar, salad bar, sandwiches, soups, beverages, desserts, and the action station. Time: 11:30 AM – 1:30 PM. Cost for the lunch buffet: Less than $10.

PROMISE Seminars & Workshops for Graduate Students & Postdoctoral Fellows 
The Conference was excellent. I liked all the panel, but specifically I liked the President’s speech. It was very inspirational and motivational. The Conference really motivates students to continue graduate studies in general. I have been to a lot of conferences, but I must say that this one, has been one of my top good conferences.
The Mini “Graduate Horizons” Session at UMBC was a success. I had all my questions answered. Also, having Dr. Hrabowski in the conference room was an experience that I will never forget.
The Mini Graduate Horizons Session At UMBC was great! I was happy to recieve vital Graduate School application information as well as pick the brains of the Accomplished panel. My favorite part, by far, was Dr. Hrabowski’s address. His address was inspirational and uplifting. I am proud to say that the summer horizions conference made me interested in making UMBC my home for Graduate School!
The “Mini” Summer Horizons Program at UMBC was outstanding. I am incredibly happy to have been able to listen to the Panel Discussion because they provided great information about how to handle your daily life and your research career. It was very appropriate to have Dr. Bediako, Dr. Walker, and Dr. Bethel speak to us because they are the product of the hard work put into their PHD studies. Therefore, they had “been there and done it” which helps the student grasp that they can finish graduate school and be successful. The keynote speaker Dr. Freeman Hrabowski was exceptional! I was inspired to work as hard as I can and as best as I can at everything I do. His motivational talk allowed me to remember the reason why I like science in the first place: because I love learning new things, as well as discover them. I am greatly thankful for his speech and have decided to obtain an MD/PHD in graduate school.
